Here We Go Again...

Long overdue update….

So here it is almost a year later. After my last post just after Thanksgiving, things just kept getting worse. I was in and out of the hospital a few times. Primarily for pre-eclampsia. We managed to make it to 36 weeks and finally, I was induced.

December 7, 2007 – he arrived. 4 lbs, 14 oz and 17 inches long. Labor was twice as long as it was with my daughter but at only 4 and a half hours long… I can’t really complain! lol

I’l c & P the birth story here….

I went to the Dr Thursday and my bp was a little higher and protein in urine had increased from Monday. He sent me to the hospital for more labs and monitoring, and said he really thought it would just be best to go ahead and deliver but we’d decide when based on the lab results. I was in triage a few hourse and when the Dr on call came in she said ‘You again? That’s it. We’re getting this baby out so you can start feeling better’. That was Dr. S. Not my Dr but the one in his practice that I would prefer after him. I really like her. So we waited awhile for a room, got admitted and they inserted the Cervidal around 8:30 ish (the times are a bit fuzzy). I felt crampy most of the night but was able to get a little sleep. At 6, they removed the cervadil and checked my cervix. I think I was 2-3 at that point but baby was still high. They started pitocin at 7 and the contractions started almost immediately. They were pretty strong but bearable. Just coming back to back and with every contraction his heart rate would drop. Dr S and the nurse watched for about 20 minutes and decided he wasn’t tolerating the pitocin so it was time to stop. They inserted an internal monitor on him to be sure they were getting an accurate heartrate reading and broke my water. They explained that the type of decels he was having was indicative of a compressed cord or problems getting enough oxygen from the placenta. Because of that they started mentally preparing me for a ceserean which I really didn’t want. We labored about 2 hours before calling the anesthesiologist. Didn’t want to wait too long just in case an emergency arised. I wanted to avoid general anesthesia if I did end up with a ceserean. They got that in place and I dozed off and on for about an hour and half. V was there, along with my mom and dad. We were all just hanging out, trying to relax when I started feeling pressure with each contraction. I told the nurse and she guessed it was the baby beginning to move down. With the next contraction I felt it again and told her it was stronger and I almost felt as if my body was involuntarily pushing with it. She looked a little concerned but said she’d check in a few minutes. With the next one I felt him move way down. I rolled over on my back spread my legs and yelled at them that someone better look because he was there. The nurse was struggling to pull on a glove but he was already there. She yelled for the Dr but it didn’t matter. With the next contraction I felt the most incredible pressure and he simply slid out all on his own. I didn’t push at all. The nurse still had her hand near me so she reached for one shoulder while my mom reached for the other and eased him down on the bed. Mom is on cloud nine and enjoying being able to brag about delivering her own grandson! He was beautiful! The cord was too short for me to get to hold him before the placenta was delivered so they took to the warmer first to check him out. We were positioned where I couldn’t see him at all for almost 10 minutes. I saw the pictures V took before I ever saw him. It was alright though. I was juts happy he was healthy. The placenta was delivered and Dr. S commented that it was one of the tiniest ones she had ever seen in a baby of his gestational age. She kept it to send off for testing. Not sure what for but I’m interested in finding out at my follow up appt. They finally got a scale in the room to weigh him and he weighed in at 4 lbs, 14 oz. Just a tiny little thing. But he’s perfect!!

He had some issues with low blood sugar but that cleared up pretty quickly. Now we’re keeping an eye on jaundice. We had to take him back for more labs today and we’ll hear something tomorrow. He weighed in at 4 lbs 6 oz today.

Now indulge me while I quietly whisper… nursing is going much, much, much better than it did with Zoie. We have some issues and I’ll post more and ask some questions later but MY BOOBS ARE WORKING! Yay me!

I didn’t feel well most of the day Thursday. Very similar to the way I felt at the end of my pregnancy with Zoie so I immediately thought about my bp. I monitored it throughout the day and night and sure enough it was elevated. Combined with a headache I had since Wednesday I called the Dr and went in Friday morning to have it checked. It was elevated, I had protein in my urine and that headache was still hanging around. She sent me to the hospital for labs and monitoring. The labs all came back good and after about 2 hours of laying on my left side the bp seemed to be on the downward trend so they sent me home to take it easy. I go back in Monday and the plan is to see me twice a week to keep a close eye on things untill it becomes necessary to deliver. I’m 35 weeks, 1 day so we’re hoping to buy a few more weeks for the baby to grow and hopefully make it to term. I feel pretty good. Just really tired and still having a hard time keeping that headache away.

Warning – I need to vent!

This is my safe place, right? So I can complain all I want! Good. Here goes….

My current complaint is this crazy pregnancy-worsened carpal tunnel. OMG it’s awful! It wakes me up at night. My fingers and hands are weak and sore the next morning and I can’t work at the computer more than a few minutes at a time without needing a break for the blood to return to my hands. I’ve resorted to wearing the wrist splints about 90% of the time now. I take them off only for selected tasks like the bathroom, cooking or things of that nature where they’ll get in the way or get dirty. It’s helped a bit but not as much as I wish it would. Waaaahhhh!

31 week 4 day appt !

Had an appt Tuesday morning. Apparently have a UTI which I also had when pregnant with my daughter. My urine was positive for Nitrates but thankfully I’ve had no other symptoms. Started antibiotics and that should take care of that.B/P is perfect.

HB was nice and strong at 150 bpm.

Had some bloodwork done because of increased naseua and itching. Will update when I get those results.

Next OB appt in 2 weeks.

Baby shower next Tuesday.

Appt update – 29 weeks, 4 days

The 3 hr GT Test came back fine and baby is head down!! I was wrong. lol I even told the u/s tech my theory before she started and was shocked when she showed me I was wrong. She was laughing at me.

Baby is still a boy. Nothing fell off.

I’ll scan some photos in later.

Failed the 1 hr GTT test. Took the 3 hr last week, should get results tomorrow at my next appt. I think things will be fine. I only failed by a few points.

I have another u/s tomorrow as well to check baby’s position. I think he might have moved a bit. He doesn’t seem to be straight up and down like he was but I also don’t feel like he’s completely flipped either. Maybe transverse or headed that way? We’ll see… I’m probably totally off though. lol

Growth is normal.

B/P is normal.

H/B is normal.

We’re down to appts every 2 weeks now and have another ultrasound scheduled for the 16th to check positioning.

Also discussed the pros and cons of whether to have a tubal immediately following delivery or wait 8 weeks. The benefits of doing it immediately is less recovery time since I’d be recovering from birth already and the benefits of waiting is that he can observe the uterus, ovaries and fallopin tubes in their normal, non-pregnant size and shape to check for any other issues we might be unaware of. Cons for doing it immediately is not being able to check everything out in their non-pregnant state and cons for waiting is having a seperate recovery time.

Questions for those that have had their tubes tied -

1. When did you have it done? Immediately following child birth or seperately?

2. How was the recovery for you?

3. Based on your experience, what do you recomend?

And just to add my totally selfish reason for wanting it done immediately is that I’m hoping this kiddo is born before the end of the year. I will have already reached the out of pocket max for my health insurance. Everything should be covered 100% at that point.

Bedding for baby!

The bedding I ordered arrived last week. I love it! It’s even nicer than the photos. I have everything pictured except the lamp and mobile.

Now we’ve got to get our rears in gear and clean out his room. lol

28 week appt Thursday including the GD test. Will update then!
